How much does it cost to travel Greece on a budget? We will give you an indication of some of our spendings to show how expensive Greece is. Prices may vary from shop to shop, the prices indicated are the cheapest price we found. We spent some time in the Balkans before arriving to Greece. So far, the most expensive country was Croatia where we spent some time during August, the most expensive season of the year. Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Macedonia were reasonably priced when we arrived in September. With the high season coming to an end and the weather getting colder, we were hoping to get some sunny days down South, in Greece. Of course we expected Greece to be a little more … (Continue reading)

If you are planning a trip to Macedonia, it may help you to see how much it cost us. Although we didn't write down every single expense, we did keep track of prices to give an indication of prices in different areas of the country. We arrived in Skopje at midnight from Podgorica. We arrived late at night and tried to find a room in one of the hostels. Most we asked, were already full. Some were too expensive. We got a private room for € 14, not far from the center. We realized that, as in most Balkan countries, you really need a car to get around (although Macedonia is also a popular destination for bicyclists). We rented a car the next day: 5 days … (Continue reading)

Traveling Cambodia on $13 per day including accommodation, transport, beer & trips

Cambodia is a cheap country. We read this statement in so many travel blogs. After 1 month in Cambodia, crossing 4 countries, we want to reveal how much we spent on accommodation, transport, food and activities. We wanted to prove it: Is Cambodia really as cheap as many travelers claim? All our expenses refer to our Cambodia Budget Guide where you will find all information based on our travel route. We were surprised about how much less we spent compared to the said travel blogs. However Cambodia was not as cheap as it was apparently a few years ago. Especially in the tourist hot spots Phnom Penh and Siem Reap prices are rising. The provinces, like Kampot and Battambang were more wallet friendly. After breaking down all expenses we're … (Continue reading)

Backpacking Cambodia on a Budget – The Complete First-Timer’s Guide to Cambodia

Wasteland That was our first impression, when still flying over Cambodia. Rows of yellow and brown fields cover a large area with barely any tree in sight. Just some houses piling up here and there form a village. Cambodia – a rural desolate country Soon, after spending nearly 1 month here, we will leave this country behind with an awkward feeling, questioning us: That was it? That was Cambodia? Why? The first impression didn't deceive us. Cambodia is a barren wasteland. Apart from that, it's shaken by a history of bloodshed. Today it's mainly driven by agriculture and tourism. Our challenge was to travel the country for 1 month in the most inexpensive and frugal way, visiting Phnom Penh, Kampot, Kep, Battambang and Siem Reap. While researching budget tips for Cambodia, so many times we came … (Continue reading)

From island to island in the Philippines

A lot of people were packed in a small, cramped area at the port, waiting for the ferry to Dumaguete, Negros Island. We were with just a few people leaving on the cheap ferry, leaving the others behind to wait for the expensive OceanJet ferry that seemed only slightly faster than our slow boat as the trip was not far. OceanJet's prices are about 5 to 10 times higher than usual, but their company is the only one that has a website, so for foreigners it often seems like it's the only option but we we did our research beforehand. From scarce online resources, we had a small list of affordable accommodation in Dumaguete but none of the prices were current; it seems prices almost double … (Continue reading)

Budget Travel Guide: Philippines, Siquijor island

Siquijor (pronounced sicky whore), also known as the Island of Fire is a fascinating destination that shouldn't be missed when traveling the popular Visayas region (Bohol, Dumaguete, Negros) in the Philippines. There are several ways to access Siquijor by all the ports of the surrounding main islands. Once you're in the Philippines you'll see how easy it is to jump from island to island. Siquijor is the third smallest province of the Philippines, thus perfect for a motorbike roadtrip. The best thing about small islands is that you can explore them within a few days. We drove around the island starting at San Juan, so our list follows the main route around the island. It's a roadtrip of about 90 kilometers. It can be easily done in 2 … (Continue reading)

While in Bali, we kept track of all our spendings and in this article we will show exactly how much it cost us to travel Bali. Kuta is a place we like to avoid, at least when it comes to accommodation and eating out. All prices mentioned in Indonesian rupiah (€1 was worth approximately 15,133 IDR (exchange rate on 21/01/2016) during our trip). Total costs: 7,762,890 rupiah. Currently, this worth €513 or €256.48 per person. This is a bit more than €8 per person per day. (The total costs exclude changing money and the plane tickets.) Without paying for medical costs, scooter repairs and … (Continue reading)

Where to Stay and Eat on a Budget in Ubud?

Ubud is said to be the cultural heart of Bali after famous artists and spiritualists visited this place and got inspired by the creative environment. Since then, hordes of travelers set out for the town located in the midst of lush green rice fields. Ubud is praised to be the paradise for yoga fans and people with an alternative lifestyle. In the beginning of the 21st century Ubud became known as a popular backpacking destination. We wanted to prove if this still applies to the current situation. It turned out that Ubud is no longer the backpacker destination it once was. The past picture of the destination vanished in favor of profit makers and to the disadvantage of budget travelers. The streets are full of fancy hotels and expensive … (Continue reading)
